Curator Talk: Behind the Scenes of The Electric Guitar 10:30–11:15 a.m. Included with paid museum admission; free for members Join Richard Walter, PhD, the lead curator behind MIM’s special exhibition, for an intriguing look at the making of The Electric Guitar: Inventing an American Icon. Learn how the exhibition has come to life as Dr. Walter shares the decision-making and collaborative processes leading to its creation, from initial brainstorming to opening the doors to the public to welcoming tens of thousands of guests!
Artist Encounter: Kevin Eubanks 1:30–2:30 p.m. Included with paid museum admission; free for members Don’t miss the opportunity to engage in a special conversation with renowned guitarist and composer Kevin Eubanks. The former music director of The Tonight Show band, with whom he appeared for eighteen years, Eubanks has a keen sensitivity to everything that makes a guitar a personal and professional musical tool. In an informal conversation and Q&A with Dr. Richard Walter, Eubanks will discuss his own experiences with the electric guitar, finding his ideal instrument, and the ways in which generations of guitarists have embraced changing technologies over the years.
Later in the evening, see Eubanks live in concert together with acclaimed guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan. The two will perform in the MIM Music Theater at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Concert tickets are sold separately and available here.
The Electric Guitar Mini-Tour 11:45 a.m., 3:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. Included with the purchase of special exhibition admission Dive deeper into the world of electric guitars and join curator Richard Walter in a twenty-minute tour of MIM’s Target Gallery. Learn additional details about some of the most rare, famous, and otherwise notable instruments in the exhibition, including artist-owned guitars and first-of-their-kind prototypes from legendary manufacturers.
This brief tour is offered three times throughout the day. Space is limited; first come, first served.
