Regina Carter:
Ms. Carter, jazz’s leading mainstream violinist, plays with a thick, warm-molasses tone; she’s equally indebted to classical technique and folk song.

Exudes a mature, nonchalant ease and cozy empathy.

Grammy-nominated violinist Regina Carter explores the power of music through her instrument across a wide range of genres, including jazz, R&B, Latin, classical, blues, country, and pop, as well as African styles. A recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship (unofficially known as the “Genius Grant”) and a Doris Duke Artist Award, Carter has been widely hailed for her mastery of her instrument and her drive to expand its possibilities.
Xavier Davis’s professional career as a jazz pianist took off when the legendary vocalist Betty Carter spotted him performing with his college ensemble at the 1994 International Association of Jazz Educators convention. Carter brought Davis to New York, hiring him as the exclusive pianist of her working trio. Today, Davis is one of the world’s most accomplished jazz pianists.
Liany Mateo is a bassist who has traveled across North America, Japan, Africa, and the Middle East performing, touring, and teaching music. Influenced by a mix of hard-hitting straight-ahead swing, avant-garde free jazz, and music with deep pocket groove, Mateo is a chameleon, fitting into many musical situations. She is currently an awardee of the Next Jazz Legacy program, apprenticing under Regina Carter.
