Enriching the medium as the first all-woman mariachi ensemble in the United States, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles brings sensitivity, beauty, warmth, and vivacious spirit to the historic art of mariachi.
The group has blazed the trail for female mariachi musicians. In a musical landscape where songs are often written by men and from male perspectives, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles has created its own history. Established in 1994, the group started strong thanks to the mentorship of acclaimed Mexican ranchera singer Lola Beltrán and mariachi maestro Jóse Hernàndez, who saw the group’s potential and fostered its development. Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles has since recorded four albums and shared the stage with such world-renowned musicians as Vikki Carr, Guadalupe Pineda, and Lucha Villa.
In 2018, the ensemble recorded the 48th album in the Smithsonian Folkways Tradiciones/Traditions Series of Latino music albums, produced with support from the Smithsonian Latino Center. The album displays the group at its best, playing fresh arrangements of gems from the mariachi legacy to create a sound of its own.
