Cristina Pato’s unique and memorable style explodes from her gaita, for which she is known as the first female Galician bagpiper to release a solo album. Her work has drawn influence from Latin music, jazz, pop, and contemporary styles, to which she brings her own vibrant passion. She has gone on to release four solo gaita recordings and two piano recordings to international acclaim, and over the course of her career, Pato has performed over six hundred concerts with her own band.
Pato has collaborated with several artists, including Yo-Yo Ma, the Chieftains, and Paquito D’Rivera, ultimately contributing to more than thirty recordings as a guest artist. She is also a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.
“Ms. Pato’s sound is unlike any bagpipe playing you’ve heard: imagine the timbres of an oboe, a metal-ready electric guitar and a screaming trumpet rolled into a single, virtuosic burst of energy.”—New York Times
“Cristina Pato the Galician Bagpipe diva is renowned for her dramatic performances, but what counts is her skill and familiarity with that octopus of an instrument, the gaita.”—BBC
Don’t miss Pato’s Q&A session with Kathleen Wiens, MIM’s curator for Europe at MIM on Thursday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. Click here for tickets.Back to Concerts
