Bettye LaVette

R&B legend Bettye LaVette spent nearly four decades toiling in the record business with little more than a fervent cult following to show for it. Then, in 2000, French collector/label owner Gilles Petard, while searching the Atlantic tape vaults, came up with the long-thought-lost tapes to a 1972 LaVette album that was never released. He licensed the tracks and released them in France on his own Art & Soul label. And that’s when one of America’s greatest soul singers finally got “discovered.” Since then, she has won a Blues Award in 2004 for “Best Comeback Album of the Year,” and in 2008, she was named “Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year.”

“Ms. LaVette, 64, now rivals Aretha Franklin as her generation’s most vital soul singer. She uses every scrape, shout and break in her raspy voice, with a predator’s sense of timing, to seize the drama of a song.”—New York Times

“She certainly is and was the greatest female soul singer.”—Ry Cooder

“The sexiest female vocalist alive.”—Esquire
